A serious incident unfolded at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on August 1, 2023, involving a man from Katy, Texas, who was attempting to evade law enforcement. The man, identified as 26-year-old Kevin Dominguez, approached the checkpoint on U.S. Highway 57, where officers were conducting routine inspections. His behavior and the circumstances of his approach quickly escalated what should have been a standard stop into a dangerous encounter.

During the approach, a trained U.S. Border Patrol canine detected movement coming from the trunk of Dominguez’s sedan. This alert indicated the likely presence of a concealed individual, prompting agents to prepare to investigate further. Dominguez was instructed to stop, and the situation immediately intensified when the trunk was found to contain another person.

Instead of complying with the Border Patrol agents’ commands, Dominguez made a split-second decision to flee. He shifted his vehicle into reverse, attempting to create an escape path. In doing so, he struck one of the agents with his car, turning the encounter into an assault on a federal officer. This action significantly elevated the seriousness of the offense.

After hitting the agent, Dominguez accelerated away from the checkpoint, initiating a dangerous flight. His decision to flee not only endangered law enforcement but also the person hidden in his trunk, who was likely being transported illegally. The attempted escape did not prevent federal authorities from pursuing the case.

The investigation that followed led to his arrest and eventual conviction in federal court. Prosecutors emphasized the deliberate nature of the assault and the risks posed to both the agent and the migrant concealed in the vehicle. Dominguez’s actions met the legal threshold for assaulting a federal officer, a felony offense.

As a result of his conviction, Dominguez was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison. The sentence underscores the seriousness with which federal authorities treat assaults on law enforcement and reinforces the dangers associated with human smuggling attempts at border checkpoints.
